More Fresh, Whole Foods + First Giveaway!

Okay, so on the stomach front (It’s hard not to talk about when it’s all I’m thinking about, all the time – sorry!), I got a CT scan this morning. I don’t know if any of you have ever gotten one, but you have to drink this disgusting barium sulfate stuff. I’ve heard it described as a chalk-flavored milkshake, but I would describe it more as cough-syrup/the-worst-berry-bubblegum-toothpaste-you-can-ever-remember-having-as-a-child-at-the-dentist flavored laundry detergent. Either way, not a fun thing to wake up to at 7 in the morning, especially in the quantity of 900 mL. Also, just thought of this – wouldn’t it have been funny if I’d food porned it? Haha.
Anyways, I felt really sick afterward and actually had to leave work early (thanks, Susan!) But, I’m seeing a specialist on Friday, and I’m still eating detoxifying whole foods and avoiding salt – except for the occasional spoonful of [salted] creamy TJ’s peanut butter (I may feel awful, but I still have my reputation and self-identity, which is inextricably linked to PB, to think about too, ya know…).So, I’m still eating extra simply and healthfully…

Antioxidant-Rich Acaí-Cocoa-Banana-Cherry Smoothie:

Blended with almond milk and topped with fresh blueberries and cinnamon.
Sliced Apples with Rosemary from Ani’s Raw Desserts:

I know you don’t really need a “recipe” for something like that, but without Ani’s suggestion, I might not have thought to combine apples, rosemary, and fresh lemon juice, and I’m so glad I did! It was so refreshing and exotic (AND it reminded me of these oat bars that I loved).

Detox Bowl # ? (I lost track…)Wild rice with lemon, nooch, and some random spices, topped with more chickpeas, steamed sweet potatoes, and pineapple-soy yogurt sauce, all on a bed of romaine lettuce:

And now for my first ever giveaway! I wish I could say that some cool health food company had offered me and a lucky reader free products, but alas, I’m not that popular. Instead, I’m offering up a box of Weil by Nature’s Path Fruit & Nut Bars (scroll all the way to the right) that I happen to have, being an intern at Weil Lifestyle! The winner will get their choice between Goji-Moji, Banana Manna, and Pistachi-Oh! In addition to being vegan, these bars contain nothing artificial, and are certified as being non-GMO. Their ingredient lists might not be quite as short as those of our Larabars, but I promise Weil bars won’t disappoint!

To enter, just leave a comment telling me what your ultimate bar flavor would be (and who knows? Maybe if your idea is appealing enough to me, I’ll actually make it, blog it, and dedicate it to you, á la Norabars!) If you want to be entered twice, just blog about this giveaway. Also, for those of you who are particulary ambitious, I’ll enter you THREE times if you join Dr. Weil’s Facebook Fan Page: Andrew Weil, M.D. (plus, I think you’ll appreciate the info you get there anyways, and would recommend staying on as a fan afterwards). If you blog about the giveaway or join the page, leave me a comment letting me know! Also, very sorry to do this, but this giveaway is only open to U.S. readers–I’m not going to overseas ship 16 nutrition bars–we need to maintain some semblance of a sustainable lifestyle here, guys! I’ll leave entries open until 12:00 am, August 1st.

  1. I tried the Weil Chocolate Walnut yesterday and loved it. Adding some coconut to that bar just might be my dream raw bar!

  2. Ruby Red Vegan

Mmm…barium sulfate milkshake! Do you think you could get the recipe for me?!??<3 TJ's nut butter – raw almond butter, to be exact!!! Yum yum yum!I am in love with that acai smoothie idea right now. The picture you took is just wonderful. I haven't actually made an acai smoothie, ever, but this so makes me want to go and buy some frozen acai. Giveaway! Yay! My ideal bar flavor would be fig/almond!!! But I have never tried the Goji or Pistachio flavors of the Dr. Weil bars, and I don't know why, because the ingredient combos sound delicious!

  3. I really wish you had posted your milkshake on the ppk. You should have put a straw in it, and a little umbrella, and called it something else, then waited to see how long it took somebody to recognize it or tell you it looked gross. Ha!Hope you feel better soon.

  4. Pistachio and Cardamom

oh! barium sulfate milkshake in bar form! or for the faint of heart…pistachio cinnamon fig with white chocolate chips!

  5. My ideal bar would be strawberry/coconut. I don't really know anything about Dr. Weil, but my friend took a course on drugs, culture, and politics that used one of his books as a text.

  6. I think my ideal bar would be orange-goji-pecan with cardamom and cinnamon!Sorry about your nasty "milkshake" this morning!

  11. It would have been hysterical if you posted a picture of your milkshake! I hope you get your stomach problems resolved soon, keep us posted. My ultimate bar flavor would be Banana Nut (like my PPK username). I love the combination of bananas and nuts together.

  12. That milkshake definitely sounds pretty nasty :( Barium sulfate does not sound like something anyone should be eating. My ideal bar…hmmm. Maybe a mango coconut? Yeah, that sounds good :) Actually, that sounds really good…if my kitchen wasn't such a disaster right now I'd take a crack at them myself, haha. I love TJ's PB, but I really like the unsalted…I guess I'm weird :)

  13. Glad the CT scan went okay. I saw on Twitter yesterday that you were drinking that icky milkshake deal. Hope you get some good answers soon (have you ever seen Mystery Diagnosis on TLC? That's what this reminds me of!). As for the giveaway, I've been meaning to try those bars. Saw them at the Whole Foods a few weeks ago. My ultimate bar flavor: Coconut Cashew Butter Cream!

  23. chocolate coconut (like that raw revolution one.) dude, i've had that procedure done.. you gotta keep it down otherwise YOU HAVE TO DO IT AGAIN! it was horrible. AIGH. Another flavor i would really like would be cinnamon peach? or cinnamon crunchy blueberry. clove ginger cinnamon almond.

  24. Sorry to hear about your poor tum! When I read what you'd been drinking (on Facebook, I think) I was so surprised as it didn't sound very healthy (or tasty!) to me! Then I realised what you were talking about! Yuck!My favourite flavour would be peanut butter and chocolate or peanut butter and chocolate or, failing that, peanut butter and chocolate… Do they make Lara Bars in those flavours?

  25. I've been meaning to try your Norabars! Dr. Weil's bars sound really good. I became a fan on facebook, btw. I usually buy bars that are cocoa and almond or pb. But for something different – a tart cherry and coconut sounds good. Hope your tummy issues get resolved soon!

  26. Hmmm, cherry fig almond chai bars would be pretty great!

  27. Your pre-scan drink sounds horrible! Glad you made it through. My ideal bar, and it's probably already been done, is chocolate-pb-banana. You just can't go wrong.

  30. Chia Razz has certainly grabbed my interest!

  31. I'm in love with the Blueberry Brownies from Veganomicon. Chocolate and blueberries go so well together and would make for a tasty bar. Then again, so do chocolate and many other things. :)
